NAB Show 2016, Las Vegas
This year we were lucky enough to attend the 2016 National Association of Broadcasters held at the Las Vegas Convention Centre.
NAB show is the world’s largest annual convention covering filmed entertainment and the development, management and delivery of content across all mediums. The exhibition featured 1,874 companies spanning 1,063,380 net square feet of exhibit space.
A total of 103,012 attendees had registered for this year’s show, with more than 26,000 of them being international attendees spanning 187 countries. There was definitely a heavy focus on post production infrastructure, as new developments must keep up with the growing demands of using higher resolution cameras.
From a Digital Cinema perspective, most of the usual heavy-hitters had something new on show. Arri showed off their recent Alexa Mini, as well as the rental-only Alexa 65.
Red Digital Cinema had plenty on show, with new accessories for their recent DSMC2 cameras, including the Weapon, Scarlet-W and Raven.
Definitely some surprises from them, and as Red Users, it was great to catch up with the team from Red to talk all their new technology. Their new viewfinder is a huge step up from the OLED Bomb that we’ve got.
The Scarlet-W is a much better camera than initially anticipated, and we definitely hope to get our hands on one soon.
Eyes were certainly on Blackmagic Design for their URSA Mini 4.6k, with plenty of varying lens setups available for attendees to play with. They were clearly out to show how versatile this camera is, especially for the ENG crowd with a surplus of B4 lenses to repurpose.
The price point of this camera makes it very affordable for what it delivers and we’re sure to see plenty of them out in the field. The pictures from the 4.6k sensor are very impressive.
Four days of geek chat was plenty, and four days of Las Vegas was probably one too many. Overall, the show was a great learning experience with plenty of opportunities to have meaningful discussions with peers, and check out some really groundbreaking technology.
